Long Distance Moving

A long distance move is a major undertaking in itself! You have to tie up several loose ends at your original residence and start all over at your new destination. The sooner you can start planning a long distance move, the better.

There are many things to do when you are moving long distance. Perhaps you are moving all the way across the country or maybe just a couple of states away. Either way, there are many things to do on both ends and the sooner you hire a reputable and trustworthy long distance mover, the better!

Choosing long distance movers isn't as simple as just calling the ones listed in the phone book and certainly not by choosing them via the Internet! One of the most valuable pieces of information you can obtain when choosing a long distance mover is that it is fine to research all of the ins and outs of long distance movers online, but do NOT commit to a long distance mover who gives you a reasonable quote and delivery time online and then asks for a credit card or large deposit at the time of reservation. You must NOT commit to these companies online or over the phone; you should avoid all companies (whether you find them online or not) if they do not send an estimator to your home to properly inventory and evaluate all of the items to be moved. This is a scam and it is illegal and non-binding estimates (the kind given to you without someone physically coming into your home) are not what you want! A non-binding estimate will not guarantee you anything but headaches and frustrations and a huge increase in your final bill at the time of delivery....or else...! These less than reputable long distance moving companies, for lack of a better term, sometimes hold your items "hostage" until you agree to pay their new inflated fees. Sometimes, these bills can be thousands of dollars more than the original non-binding estimate. Hopefully, with a corporate move you won't have this happen, but there are documented cases of moving coordination services contracting with long distance movers in the same way and falling prey to the same illegal scams.

With each reputable, licensed and insured long distance moving company comes many different procedures and methods and just as many different prices. Be inquisitive and ask a lot of "what if" questions. Play devil's advocate when researching every long distance mover. After all, you are trusting them with all of your valuable possessions, irreplaceable heirlooms and family items and important paperwork!
